Frankfurt, Germany: A Glimpse into Old-World Charm

American football is one of the most exhilarating sports on the planet, and its global reach has grown exponentially in recent years. As the NFL’s influence continues to expand, bringing the game to new audiences around the world, it was only natural for the league to stage games beyond American borders. From Mexico to Brazil, the United Kingdom to Germany, international matchups have become a key part of the NFL’s global strategy.

In 2023, the Indianapolis Colts faced off against the New England Patriots in Frankfurt, Germany—a city known for its striking contrast between modern skyscrapers and centuries-old architecture. After a long, 9-hour flight aboard a Virgin Atlantic Airbus from Indianapolis, Indiana, we were greeted by the unmistakable sound of rich German accents. As we made our way through the city, one thing immediately stood out—the enchanting medieval architecture that seemed frozen in time. The blend of buildings from the last millennium created a unique, scenic backdrop that was impossible to overlook. With every bit of downtime that I could find, I made sure to capture the essence of this vibrant city through my lens, allowing my camera to document the fusion of Frankfurt’s timeless past and vibrant present.

Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt, Germany, has long been a central hub of commerce and culture in Europe, with its roots tracing back over a thousand years. During the Middle Ages, the city flourished as a vital trade center, attracting merchants and shaping its iconic medieval architecture. The Romer, a historic building in Frankfurt’s Altstadt (Old Town), dates back to the 14th century and remains a symbol of the city’s medieval past. Although much of the medieval city was devastated during World War II, meticulous reconstruction efforts have preserved historic structures, allowing the city’s medieval charm to coexist with its modern skyline. The blend of old and new gives Frankfurt a distinctive character that pays homage to its storied past.
